Research Activity
The members of the IIT department have interests in various scientific and scientific-applied fields. They participate in research teams that work on projects from national and international programs. They worked on:
• More than 100 projects financed by the Scientific Research Fund and other organizations in the country;
• 11 research projects funded by EU programs and other foreign organizations.
The results of the performed activity are published in:
• 42 articles in magazines abroad;
• 283 articles in Bulgarian magazines;
• 67 reports at conferences abroad;
• 529 reports at conferences in the country.
Among the significant scientific and research achievements of the department is a program and technical complex for automated programming of CNC machines - MNEMO, created by a team working under the leadership of Prof. Varban Iliev, PhD. The work on this development was carried out in the period 1983 - 1991. The author's team won a gold medal from the Plovdiv Fair in 1986, as well as several gold badges from TNTM reviews. The program system of the complex successfully competes with similar systems developed in a number of European countries and Japan. It has been implemented in more than 50 enterprises and scientific institutes in the country and the former USSR and GDR.
During the period 1997 - 2001, a team from the department was one of the seven partners - implementers of the CONFLOW project under the INCO Copernicus program. Working on this project forces team members to enter a completely new field for them and demonstrate knowledge and skills to successfully complete the work on the project and receive an extremely high rating from the reviewers.
From 09.1999 to 04.2001 Prof. Tsvetomir Vasilev, PhD worked as a research assistant at the Department of Computer Science, University College London on the research project "Centre for 3D Electronic Commerce – Virtual Shopping". The main goal is to develop software in which a fabric model is embedded and through which models of human bodies obtained with a three-dimensional scanner can be dressed. Currently, the system is installed in two stores: "Selfridges"-London and "Le Bon Marche"-Paris.
Work on research projects is planned every year. In all topics proposed by the IIT Department and financed by the Scientific Research Fund, students and doctoral students participate in the working teams. Their participation in scientific projects is motivating and stimulating for their development and appearances: participation in conferences and student scientific sessions, development of theses, receiving awards, etc.
During the period 2016-2021, more than 50 students and doctoral students took part in International Student Scientific Forums, the traditional Student Scientific Sessions of RU&SU, and also in the projects financed by the Intra-University Scientific Research Fund.
